Performance Characteristics of Sliding Bearing Shell Materials
The bearing shell, as the contact part between the sliding bearing and the journal, is a semi-cylindrical surface shaped like a tile, very smooth, and generally made of wear-resistant materials such as bronze and anti-friction alloys. In special cases, it can be made of wood, engineering plastics, or rubber. The bearing shell plays a significant role in the bearing's operation, and its material performance has certain characteristics.
The main performance characteristics of bearing shell materials are as follows:
1. Anti-friction: The material pair has a low coefficient of friction.
2. Wear resistance: The wear resistance of the material, usually expressed as the wear rate.
3. Anti-sticking (adhesion): The heat resistance and anti-adhesion properties of the material.
4. Friction compliance: The ability of the material to compensate for poor initial fit of the bearing sliding surface through surface elastic-plastic deformation.
5. Embedding ability: The ability of the material to accommodate hard particles, thereby reducing scratches or abrasive wear on the bearing sliding surface.
6. Running-in: The ability (or property) of the bearing shell and journal surfaces to form a mutually matching surface shape and roughness after a short period of light-load operation. 7. In addition, it should have sufficient strength and corrosion resistance, good thermal conductivity, processability, and economy.
Types of sliding bearing bush materials: Commonly used bush materials include: metallic materials, non-metallic materials, and powder metallurgy materials.
Metallic bush materials generally use bearing alloys (Babbitt metal, white alloy), which are alloys composed of tin, lead, antimony, copper, etc.; copper alloys are mainly divided into bronze and brass; cast iron includes ordinary gray cast iron, ductile iron, etc.
Non-metallic bush materials include plastics, hardwoods, rubber, etc., with plastics being the most commonly used.
Powder metallurgy bush materials are porous bush materials made by pressing and sintering powders of copper, iron, graphite, etc.
