In the world of precision-operating machinery, rolling bearings, though small in size, are indispensable "joints." Rolling bearings are mechanical components used to support shafts and axles. Depending on their design, they can withstand radial or axial loads while simultaneously enabling the shaft or components mounted on it to rotate. Faced with a wide variety of bearings, how can we quickly build a comprehensive understanding? Dimension 1: Consider the "Direction of Force"

 

This is the most basic classification method. If a bearing primarily bears a "radial load" perpendicular to the axis, it is a radial bearing; if it primarily bears an "axial load" along the axis, it is a thrust bearing. In addition, there are angular contact bearings that can handle both types of forces simultaneously.

 

Dimension 2: Consider the "Shape of Rolling Elements"

 

The rolling elements within the bearing determine its characteristics. Ball bearings have spherical rolling elements, characterized by low friction and high limiting speed. Roller bearings, on the other hand, have cylindrical, tapered, or needle-roller rolling elements. They have a larger contact area, higher load-bearing capacity, and are better suited for heavy-duty applications.

 

Dimension Three: Consider "Special Functions and Structures"

 

To address complex installation environments, bearings have evolved with different structural characteristics. For example, when there is deflection or misalignment between the shaft and housing, "self-aligning bearings" with spherical raceways can automatically compensate for the misalignment; while "non-self-aligning bearings" offer greater rigidity. Furthermore, bearings can be classified by rolling element arrangement (single-row, double-row, and multi-row) and by installation method (separable bearings with independently installable inner and outer rings) and non-separable "integral bearings."
