What is an oil seal?

 

An oil seal is a mechanical component used to seal oil (oil is the most common liquid substance in transmission systems, and also refers to any liquid substance in general). It isolates the lubricated parts of a transmission system from the output parts, preventing lubricant leakage. Static seals and dynamic seals (generally reciprocating motion) use sealing elements called seals. A representative type of oil seal is the TC oil seal, a double-lip oil seal completely encapsulated in rubber with a self-tightening spring. Generally, when people talk about oil seals, they are referring to this type of TC skeleton oil seal.

 

What is an oil seal made of?

 

Oil seals are made of rubber. Oil seals are mainly used at the joint of two lubricated parts to prevent oil leakage, such as crankshaft oil seals, half-shaft oil seals, and transmission housing oil seals.

Skeleton oil seals are a typical example of oil seals, and generally, when people talk about oil seals, they are referring to skeleton oil seals. The function of an oil seal is generally to isolate the lubricated parts of a transmission system from the output parts, preventing lubricant leakage. The oil seal's skeleton acts like the reinforcing steel in a concrete structure, providing strength and maintaining its shape and tension.

 

Based on structure, oil seals can be divided into single-lip and double-lip skeleton seals. The secondary lip of a double-lip skeleton seal acts as a dust barrier, preventing external dust and impurities from entering the machine. Based on skeleton type, they can be divided into internal skeleton seals, exposed skeleton seals, and assembled seals. Based on working conditions, they can be divided into rotary skeleton seals and reciprocating skeleton seals. They are used in gasoline engine crankshafts, diesel engine crankshafts, gearboxes, differentials, shock absorbers, engines, axles, and other components.

 

What materials are commonly used for skeleton oil seals? The most common materials for skeleton oil seals are nitrile rubber (NBR), fluororubber (VITON), silicone rubber (SIL), and nylon (PA). Of course, there are also PTFE Teflon oil seals, external skeleton oil seals, etc.
